Portraits of the People of Namsos

curated by Sara Cornelia Greiff

These commissioned portraits are of people from Namsos, a town destroyed by Nazi bomber planes in 1939. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain failed to get his navy out of the region, leaving thousands of the allies dead. Winston Churchill succeeded in publicly humiliating Chamberlain for his failure and became Prime Minister. The people depicted, some related to the actual incident, others having overcome hugely traumatic experiences of other wars, or deeply personal stories of grief and deep sadness.
