Nike: I Run NY
The largest and most successful sportswear company in the world, Nike, hired an ad agency to look for and commission an artist who would create a new campaign for their newly released city running shoes.
The ad agency saw my piece Drugstore Photographs while it was exhibited at PS1 MoMA and they asked me to create an ad with the same spirit as my photographs of Manhattan, now in the collection of The New York Public Library.
I asked Nike to get the permission from the classic Hagstrom Map Company so I could create a map of different quality toilets a runner could use while they were planning their run around the city.
Nike formed a collaboration with Time Out New York Magazine for this project and the map would be printed the scale of the traditional Manhattan Hagstrom map, have a sense of humour and be given out free as a special edition artist print.
I turned their very well-known map into black and white, and using the classic Hagstrom colours to become my colours for the key code, giving the runner an idea of the kind of toilets they would find in The Big Apple!
