Making Shirts at The Steam Room Basement

curated by Rowena Chiu

I was introduced to Rowena Chiu through my teacher from School of Visual Arts, the painter Joan Snyder. Rowena came to my studio, I showed her different work and when she saw the photographs of my folded shirts she pauses and said, “I can do something with that”. Rowena told me about a family who came to the UK in the 1970s from Hong Kong, opened a Chinese takeaway, and how the grandson of these immigrants had turned the family business into The Steam Room, an extraordinary dry cleaner with a community space in the basement. Here Rowena wanted to set up my sewing machine and make shirts for everyone to see who came to drop off their clothing to be dry cleaned.
